The NExNE Programme for 2008 is now over - but have a look below to see what we got up to this year...

Thursday 24th July

From the Dawn of Creation - An Audience with Alan McGee

The Georgian Theatre 6pm - 8pm [FREE]

Alan McGee co-founded Creation Records in 1983. Over the next sixteen years he signed some the most influential acts of the day, including: Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine. In the early 1990s - shortly after Creation received investment from Sony Entertainment - Alan made his most influential signing, Oasis. Having witnessed the band grow to be one of Britain’s true super-groups, Creation was then taken over by Sony in the mid 1990s. In 1999 he started a new venture, Poptones, with Julian Richer (from Richer Sounds). After initial success with The Hives, the label closed. Alan now manages and advises artists on the DIY approach to the music business. His story is an inspiration for anyone wishing to set-up a music company.

As part of this event, Alan has invited Kathryn Williams (who he once managed) and The Grants (a new group from Liverpool) to appear at the Georgian Theatre, later that evening. Alan’s talk takes place between 6-8pm, and is a free. However you need to book a place in advance by emailing: register@nexne.org.uk or telephoning 0191 2450099 [then select option #5].

Tickets for Kathryn Williams and The Grants gig are £5 in advance or £6 on the door and are available from Green Dragon Studios, Tel: 01642 674 115 or buy online by clicking the 'What's On' button on the right of this page.

NExNE LIVE presents Kathryn Williams plus The Grants

£5 door / £6 adv

Music selected by Alan McGee

Kathryn Williams is one of the UK's most respected and critically acclaimed singer-songwriters. She made her first album, Dog Leap Stairs, on her own Caw Records label in 1999. Famously it was recorded for the princely sum of £80 - the NME declared it “jaw-droppingly beautiful”. The follow-up, Little Black Numbers, garnered a Mercury nomination, bringing her to the attention of a wider public. A spell with EastWest / Atlantic followed (Old Low Light, 2002 and the Relations covers album, 2004), before she returned to her independent roots with 2005's Over Fly Over. She released her sixth album, Leave To Remain, on Caw in 2006. Most recently she recorded and released the album Two, a collaboration with singer-songwriter Neil MacCall. http://www.kathrynwilliams.net/

The Grants are a dynamic four-piece, from Liverpool, whose myspace site quickly attracted the attention of Alan McGee. Alan invited the band to play at his Notting Hill club night, Death Disco. Impressed by their music and attitude, Alan has invited the band to record an album, in Palm Springs, for his new Creation Studios venture.
